Could your church host a Market Garden?

June 25th, 2009

Local social enterprise Growing Communities are looking for more market garden sites in Hackney so that they can meet the growing demand for their locally grown vegetables. It’s all about cutting food miles and ‘growing our community’ which matches the aims of Peter’s Net. This editor can testify, as a customer of their weekly vegetable/fruit bag service, to the deliciousness of their Hackney grown Mixed Salad. Sites need to be at least 100 square meters in size to be viable.

Peter’s Net has volunteered to put out a request to local churches to see if any are in a position to help with a tried and tested formula. St. Paul’s on Stoke Newington Road already hosts a successful market garden. And some excess produce from the Growing Communities trading activities is already donated for free to the Hackney Winter Night Shelter. Would your kids’ primary school benefit from a Uniform Reuse Service?

June 23rd, 2009

Joan of Arc RC Primary School in Highbury has established a successful service whereby school uniforms that children have outgrown are collected during the school year, laundered by volunteers and then displayed for free collection by parents. An information sheet with details on how to run this service is being produced so that other schools can easily copy the service. If you would like a copy please email us at info@peter-net.org and mark your email for the attention of Thrusie. Thank you.

‘Italian Fair’ outside St.Peter’s Italian Church on Clerkenwell Road

June 4th, 2009

The London branch of ACLI (The Christian Association of Italian Workers) and fellow parishioners are working with Camden Council, FARMA and Slow Food London to create an Italian ethical market to take place once a month. The market will serve parishioners attending Mass and also the local community. This market will help fill the gap left by the closure of the much loved Terroni delicatessen next door to the church and also provide ethically sourced food. Right now we are looking for suppliers of unique and genuine products, some Italian staples such as dry pasta at very good prices and fresh vegetables and fruit direct from farms. We are aiming to start in September 2009. If you feel you can help in any way please get in touch using the comment box below or emailing the organisers at nfranchini@hotmail.co.uk
